The elks are a historic group that does a lot for communities around the World. The lodge in Boulder does not live up to the name. Thats where our design takes over. The exterior features a module inspired by botanical studies of a pinecone. Made of carbon sequestering concrete, the module features a vein that holds plants and protects them during the winter. The interior features a whole new set of mid-century modern furniture and an entirely revamped bar and lounge area. The outdoor area has aredesigned RV park to bring order, beauty, and entertainment to the existing area. The overarching program of our design is a mesh between modern organic shapes and mid century modern design, giving a modern flair while upholding the rich history of the Elks.

Initial site analysis showed a lack of consistency and order in the RV Park, with no designations and stuff everywhere. We saw a dark and gloomy bar that was disconnected from the main party area. As well as an exterior that was falling apart. We aim to revitalize the lodge and make it attractive to younger people in order to carry on the legacy of the Elks to the next generation.

Elk’s Lounge Bar Redesign Concept

The elk’s lodge lounge bar has been redesigned to create a more dynamic and functional space. A key objective of our redesign was to improve the connection between the bar and the adjacent ballroom. To achieve this, we extended the bar around the corner to form a wraparound l-shaped layout. This addition not only enhances accessibility but also provides dedicated bar service for the ballroom area, creating a more inclusive experience for guests. Additionally, we updated the shelving, lighting fixtures, and furniture throughout the space to reflect a mid century modern aesthetic while honoring the lodge’s heritage.

Furnishings

Through a mid-century modern lens, our redesign honors the Elk Lodge’s heritage while simultaneously modernizing its interior function. The main bar room has been updated as a communal lounge, whose timeless aesthetic fits comfortably in the scenery of the Boulder Foothills.

Landscape

The objective of the redesign is to add attraction to the exterior with the creation of sport courts for Elks members. While organizing the RV Park in the open field on the south west side of the property.

Basketball and pickleball courts have been added due to their popularity and lack of amenities in this part of the city. Along the extended path there is a shaded area that can be used by both the court users and residents of the RV Park.

The design of the RV Park is inspired by our module shape and responds to the organizational problem that currently exists at the site. The new designated common space, which includes tables, chairs, and lights, will benefit the Elk members experience.
