This locker room is more than a place to change – it’s part of the summer story. Designed to reflect the energy of poolside fun, it captures the joy of sun-warmed skin, playful splashes, and carefree laughter. It’s a light, welcoming space that keeps the spirit of summer flowing from the water to whatever comes next.

Pool Impact – A confident, cohesive redesign that celebrates the Elks’ mid-century roots while delivering major visual impact.

Materiality & Mood

The key factors we considered in our design consisted of a heavy emphasis on maintaining the midcentury modern feel of the Elk’s club, paired with a focus on sustainability. Every tile we used was selected based not only for its design but also based on a high standard of eco friendly requirements. This is seen in our decision to choose Eco-Terr’s Mestre Cream Terrazzo flooring for its durability, low environmental impact, and subtle elegance. Eco-Terr® is stain, frost, chemical, and fire-resistant; Material Health Grade Certified and the microlinen texture offers the highest DCOF in the market. The soft tonal variation adds depth and texture without overpowering the space – a nod to mid-century design especially when paired with the concrete breezeblock entry.

To complement the terrazzo, we selected Clayhaus Tile for the fun mid-century modern wall tile designs. Lacava’s Zoom faucets and WaterSense shower fixtures in brushed nickel provide all the functionality required with design elegance and commercial durability. Their streamlined silhouette and water-saving technology balance form and function beautifully. Every element was chosen not only for its aesthetic alignment with Mid-Century Modern principles but also for its sustainable story – emphasizing conservation without compromise.

Innovative Safety & Comfort

Swimmers should be safe both in and out of the pool. We have made considerations for accessibility and safety. Warmup’s electric underfloor heating systems were installed throughout the bathrooms for year-round comfort. This low-energy heating solution enhances the space while
reducing reliance on forced-air systems and space heaters.

We also incorporated Airmada Air-Jet Drying Systems into the showers to reduce moisture build-up. Standing water was an issue. The strategically placed jets are a game-changer for high-traffic facilities, reducing standing water and enhancing hygiene. Despite the fact that this bathroom lacks an accessible entrance, we made sure that the interior met all the code and clearance expectations of ADA. For example, the stalls we chose were from the company Iron Wood, who ensures all ADA requirements are met for installation and function. We would love to see a ramp provided for easy accessibility into the bathroom in the future.

Playful Utility

Balancing durability with delight, we designed the bathrooms with custom-colored tile bands and nostalgic wall graphics that honor the Elks’ community spirit and the joy of summertime swims. While functionality was key, we also infused the space with fun. To spark conversation and connect guests to the Elks Lodge identity, we developed the concept for a custom mural titled “The Elklectic Minds” and plan to commission a local artist to bring it to life on the shared wall, encouraging social media engagement (#BoulderElks566, #ElklecticMinds). Built-in lockers and easy-to-clean surfaces ensure the bathrooms remain tidy, while a crisp white palette is energized with accents of teal, orange, and yellow—evoking breezy relaxation and poolside playfulness.
