Coffee, creativity, and a few ideas we’re still thinking about.
The morning after our Month of Modern kickoff, we kept the conversation going with a special edition of Caffeinated Mornings, hosted by Jay Ferracane of Angry Bovine at The Brand Studios.
Jay sat down with musician and songwriter Kevin Hart of Public Opinion to talk music, collaboration, and the creative process—how ideas start, how they change, and what happens when you invite other people into the making of something.
Naturally, it got us thinking about architecture.
There’s a lot of music out there. There’s a lot of architecture. In either discipline, how do you find your own voice? Sometimes getting out of your own head—and your own discipline—is a pretty good place to start.
Kevin talked about collaboration and the different strengths people bring to the process. The guitarist. The songwriter. The technical mind. The communicator. Not everyone needs to bring the same thing to the table. In fact, that’s kind of the point. When people have room to contribute what they do best, they become invested in what they’re making together.
Sound familiar, designers?
Then there was the idea of the A side / B side. The hit or the deep cut. Expected or experimental. It left us wondering: where does architecture land? And where does the most interesting work happen?
The parallels kept coming.
An album has narrative, sequence, and rhythm. Track 01 → 02 → 03. The order matters. Architecture unfolds in much the same way: arrival → flow → reveal → pause. Sequence shapes the experience.
And then there’s Track 01.
Kevin talked about choosing that first song—the one that sets the tone for everything that follows. Which made us think about the big move in architecture. The idea that establishes the project. The first moment that tells you something about what’s coming next.
Music and architecture are very different things. But the creative questions? Maybe not so different.
Thanks to Jay Ferracane for inviting us into the conversation, Kevin Hart for sharing his creative process, The Brand Studios for welcoming us, and The Coffee Ride for keeping everyone appropriately caffeinated.
And thanks to everyone who spent the morning with us.
